Movie Summary

Director:
Roger Donaldson
Released:
1997
Rating:
PG-13

Four years ago, Dr. Harry Dalton, a vulcanologist, lost his wife while trying to evacuate from a roaring volcano that no one saw coming. Now, in the small town of Dante's Peak, Washington, Dalton believes the same is about to happen. After some strange seismic activity in the Cascade Mountains, Dalton comes to Dante's Peak to confirm his suspicions. There he meets town mayor Rachel Wando and her two children. They form a friendship as Wando helps Dalton conduct his tests. What he finds sadly confirms what he expected. During a town meeting, urging the citizens of Dante's Peak to evacuate in time, the rumbling volcano wakes and violently tares through the town with earthquakes, flying debris, and a stampeding river of lava destroying everything it passes. It's up to Dalton to save Wando and her family as their perfect town turns to hell on earth.

Metacritic Score

  • 60

The New York Times Elvis Mitchell

The special effects are suitably catastrophic, though they aren't much more clever than the computer tricks that turn up in beer commercials these days.

  • 50

    Los Angeles Times Kenneth Turan

Dante's Peak is customary for the genre, with convincing special effects sharing screen time with standard-issue characters and situations.

  • 50

    Variety Todd McCarthy

Physicality of the second half, then, will keep the audience going, but it is not quite sufficient to camouflage the elemental silliness of storyline.
