Dark Forces, also known as Harlequin, is a 1980 fantasy thriller film which tells a modern-day version of the story of Rasputin. Grigori Rasputin was a Russian mystic who was referred to as the Mad Monk, who influenced the the lives of Russian Emperor Nicholas II and his family, possibly helping to discredit the tsarist government, eventually bringing down the Romanov dynasty. In Dark Forces, the main characters share the first names as Rasputin and the Romanov royal family, with the last name Rast, which was symbolically chosen since it spells Tsar in reverse. We join up and coming senator Nick Rast (David Hemmings), who has a young son who is very ill with leukaemia. Gregory Wolfe (Robert Powell), a powerful faith healer, appears and offers his help to the boy, treating his illness with his impressive powers.
