Rating:

Darkman is a 1990 science fiction superhero action thriller movie by director Sam Raimi, who also wrote the original story. The first movie in the Darkman trilogy, Darkman stars Liam Neeson as Peyton Westlake, a scientist who is attacked by a mobster, Durant (Larry Drake), after his attorney girlfriend (Frances McDormand) gets on the wrong side of a corrupt developer (Colin Friels). Westlake barely survives, his body severely covered with burns that leave him hospitalized as a comatose John Doe. He is subjected to a radical new treatment that destroys the nerve endings in his skin, making him unable to sense pain, but more emotionally affected when injured. Half-crazed, Westlake escapes the hospital and assumes the identity of masked vigilante Darkman, in order to seek revenge on those who took away his former life. Darkman did very well in the box office, as well as with the critics, winning two awards at the 1990 Sitges â Catalonian International Film Festival and an additional nomination, as well as five nominations for 1991 Saturn Awards.

  • 75

    Entertainment Weekly Owen Gleiberman

Darkman is a thrillingly demented pop spectacular: a grade-B movie made by a grade-A lunatic.

  • 75

    San Francisco Chronicle Mick LaSalle

Darkman is big, stupid and wonderful -- an absurd, grand-scale adventure and a vicious comedy rolled into one nasty, unpleasant, hard-to-resist mess. [24 Aug. 1990, p.E1]

    USA Today Mike Clark

Cult director Sam Raimi has come a long way since giving us killer tree limbs in whichever (I've repressed it) Evil Dead pic had them. With good leads and a few bucks, he's come up...
