Movie Summary

Zack Snyder
Dawn of the Dead is a zombie horror film directed by Zack Snyder that follows a set of survivors as they seek solace in an abandoned indoor mall in a bid for survival as an increasing horde of zombies begins to take over Milwaukee and the United States. It had been a long shift for Ana (Sarah Polley) as a nurse, but when her night off finds her surrounded by everyone, including her husband, reanimating into zombies, she has to run for her life. As Ana runs for her life, she joins cop Kenneth Hall (Ving Rhames), Michael (Jake Weber), agitated Andre (Mekhi Phifer), and Andre's very pregnant wife Luda (Inna Korobkina) in their decision to head to the mall, thinking that would be safe enough to hide for a bit. There they have to barricade themselves with the security guards and another group of survivors as they use all that their surroundings can to wait out any hope of being saved. Can the group wait out this catastrophic disaster without meeting the bitter end of a zombie? Dawn of the Dead is a remake of George Romero's classic horror film of the same name.moreless

Metacritic Score

  • 80

    Los Angeles Times Manohla Dargis

Good zombie fun, the remake of George A. Romero's Dawn of the Dead is the best proof in ages that cannibalizing old material sometimes works fiendishly well.

  • 50

    Variety Scott Foundas

More palatable than "Texas," Dawn also seems even less necessary, given how effectively the original was reworked last year in Danny Boyle's "28 Days Later."

  • 30

The New York Times A.O. Scott

The eventual video game is bound to be a lot more fun -- and less slowed down by bad dialogue -- than this "Dead."
