Day One is a remarkably accurate drama film which documents the rise of the atomic bomb during WWII. The film focuses on the superhuman brains behind the weapon - that is Leo Szilard (Michael Tucker), Gen. Leslie Groves (Brian Dennehy), and J. Robert Oppenheimer (David Strathairn). In 1942, political mayhem in Europe led to the development of The Manhattan Project, an effort led by the United States, the UK and Canada to build an atomic bomb. The idea of building an atomic bomb of mass proportions was first incited by one of Albert Einstein's closest friends, a physicist from Hungary named Leo Szilard. After persuading the government to invest in such research, General Leslie Groves enlisted theoretical physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer to oversee the production of the bomb at the Los Alamos Laboratory. The film depicts the political, ethical, and economical hardships these three men encounter as they attempt to build the greatest weapon ever conceived. The film was based on a book by Peter Wyden and adapted to film by David W. Rintels. Joseph Sargent directs.moreless
