Days of Thunder is a 1990 drama about the world of professional stock car racing that stars Tom Cruise, Robert Duvall, Nicole Kidman, Cary Elwes, Michael Rooker and Randy Quaid. Directed by Tony Scott, the movie focuses on dynamic race driver Cole Trickle (Tom Cruise). Cole is recruited by wealthy car dealership tycoon Tim Daland (Randy Quaid) to race in the NASCAR Winston Cup Series. Daland teams Cole with formerly retired, legendary car-builder and crew chief Harry Hogge (Robert Duvall). Although at first unsuccessful as a racer, after Harry puts Cole through intensive and rigorous training, Cole begins to show great promise. Cole develops a heated rivalry with Winston Cup Champion Rowdy Burns (Michael Rooker), and is eventually able to defeat him. Tragedy strikes, however, when both drivers are seriously injured in the same crash. While rehabillitating from his injuries, Cole develops a romantic relationship with his beautiful doctor, Claire Lewicki (Nicole Kidman), the neurosurgeon who is attending to his health. At the same time, Cole and Rowdy change from bitter rivals to become close friends. When Rowdy, who needs to undergo brain surgery, asks Cole to drive his car in the Daytona 500, Cole must call upon all of his abilities, and courage he never knew he had in order to win in the end.
