Dead Beat is a film that follows a high school nomad, Rudy (Balthazar Getty), who has spent a decent part of his life roaming the midwestern United States. During his travels, he meets an alluring and manipulative Elvis enthusiast named Kit (Bruce Ramsay). Kit seems to have it all: a great job, his own apartment, a car, and ample spending money. Under the surface, though everything is fake. He uses insoles to make himself look taller, along with hair dye and makeup to help make him appear more attractive. Rudy, desperate for a close friend and enticed by the lifestyle of his new acquaintance, falls prey to Kit's charm as he convinces him to be an accessory to a grisly murder. Dead Beat, set in 1965, chronicles the aftermath of this event which is based on the true story of Charles Schmid, a serial killer from Tucson, Arizona. This film is at odds with itself, moving between the genres of drama and satire as events unfold in a most peculiar manner.moreless
