Dead Calm is a 1989 action thriller about an Australian couple on a private yacht who unwittingly take aboard a murderer. After the tragic death of their son, John Ingram (Sam Neill) and his wife Rae (Nichole Kidman) embark on a cruise as a way to forget about the past. After coming across a distressed vessel, a lone survivor, Hughie Warriner (Billy Zane), comes aboard John and Rae's yacht. Unable to get a straight story from Hughie, John become suspicious and rows over to the vessel. After much poking around, he finds the dead bodies of the passengers and crew and a video tape of the slaughter. Panicked, John tries to row back to the ship but Hughie leaves him stranded and sails off with Rae as his hostage. Now in grave danger, Rae must find a way to outwit the psychotic Hughie while John attempts to find a way off the sinking vessel to rescue her.
