Deck the Halls is a 2006 family holiday comedy about two bickering neighbors who just don't understand the true spirit of the holidays. Steve Finch (Matthew Broderick) loves Christmas, and everything to do with the holidays. He lives and breathes for the Christmas season, planning his decorations and his family's holiday card months in advance. His passion for the holidays is so intense, Steve is actually known as "The Christmas Guy" in his Massachusetts hometown. Buddy Hall (Danny DeVito) has just moved into the house across the street from Steve. The married car salesman rubs Steve the wrong way from the beginning, but when Buddy's light display outshines Steve's, outright war breaks out between the two neighbors. In order to salvage any Christmas at all for the kids, it's up to the wives to control their warring spouses. Deck the Halls also stars Kristin Chenowith, Kristin Davis, Jorge Garcia, and Fred Arminsen.

Metacritic Score

  • 40

The New York Times A.O. Scott

Mr. Broderick and Mr. DeVito look tired and out of sorts, and you can hardly blame them, given the picture's inept, curdled mixture of sappiness and crude humor.

  • 40

    Los Angeles Times

Like a fatally snarled string of Christmas lights, Deck the Halls promises holiday cheer but delivers only frustration.

  • 30

    Variety Brian Lowry

A lifeless, workmanlike comedy conceived to provide holiday shoppers an inoffensive respite from the mall.
