Defense of the Realm is a British thriller directed by David Drury and shows one reporter's fight for the truth. The film begins with a near catastrophic crash of a nuclear bomber at an American Air Force base in England. The story captures the headlines and helps support high-profile member of Parliament Dennis Markham's (Ian Bannen) position against nuclear weapons. Just when he thinks that he has finally gotten the publicity he needs to support his policy, Dennis' world turns upside down. Reporter, Nick Mullen (Gabriel Byrne) publishes a story that links Dennis to a dignitary from East Germany. When a picture is leaked showing Dennis coming out of this woman's room, his loyalty to his country is questioned. Due to public outcry, Dennis is forced to resign and leave Parliament. Nick and his co-worker Vernon Bayliss (Denholm Elliott) believe there is more to the crash at the Air Force base and to Dennis' connection. The two start a full-fledged investigation, but when Vernon suddenly dies of a heart attack Nick is suspicious. This suspicion makes Nick more determined than ever to find the truth.moreless
