Defense Play is a teen-centric 1988 suspense drama involving secret weapons, suspicious Russians and murder. Professor Vandemeer (Terence Cooper) hires his daughter Karen (Susan Ursitti, "Teen Wolf") to work as a lab assistant with him on a covert weapons project called DART to develop an undetectable, tiny helicopter for scouting and defense. When the professor is murdered, suspicion surprisingly falls on Colonel Mark Denton (Monte Markham, who also directs), the father of her co-worker, Scott (David Oliver). Karen and Scott join forces to prove Colonel Denton's innocence and find out the real reasons for her father's death. Using their research skills and determination, the two teenagers uncover a frightening plot to infiltrate the U.S. defense system by Russian operatives. With the extraordinary abilities of the DART helicopters and inside information, the Russians target the Vandenburg Air Force Base. The likeable cast and fast-paced action keep this technology thriller an enjoyable ride.
