Desert Sands is a film belonging to the tiny sub-genre of "Foreign Legion Pics." It is the story of Capt. David Malcolm (Ralph Meeker), a cocky Legionnaire posted in Africa, who falls in love with a beautiful Arab girl named Zara (Maria English). Their love blossoms, but isn't meant to last. Zara confesses to Malcolm that her father is the evil shiek, Jala (John Carradine). Worse yet, her brother is the vengeful El Zanal (Keith Larsen), the leader of a band of Arabs, sworn to rid the land of all Legionnaires. The two lovers struggle to hold together their ill-fated relationship under constant fire from both the Arabs and the Legionnaire soldiers. Soon, Malcolm and El Zanal join forces to fight a common enemy, the two-faced Zara, whose final, dastardly plan is to pit the two sides against each other and make a profit on their death and spilled blood.
