Deserter follows German worker Karl Renn (Boris Livanov), who has left his post at a shipyard to join a picket line in solidarity with his fellow workers. Through the strike, he begins to doubt if such tactics are the best action to take in political fights and walks out on the workers. The Communist Party in Germany has taken note of Renn and offer to send him to the Soviet Union as part of a German delegation. There, he learns the benefits the political system of the country offers to its workers and decides not to return home when the delegation leaves. He finds work in a factory there but bad news is waiting for him. He learns his closest friend, revolutionary Ludwig Zeile (Vasili Kovrigin), has been killed by police. He knows he must leave the Soviet Union and rejoin the fight of the workers he once abandoned. The 1933 film from Vsevolod Pudovkin is the director's first use of sound in motion pictures.moreless
