Desire Under the Elms is a 1958 drama starring Anthony Perkins and Sophia Loren. The film is based on a greek tragedy of the same title written by Eugene O'Neill. The play was adapted to film by Irwin Shaw and directed by Delbert Mann. Ephriam Cabot (Burl Ives), an old, greedy New Englander runs a large farm with his third wife Abbie (Sophia Loren). One of his sons from a previous marriage, Eben (Anthony Perkins) visits the farm with the intention of claiming his rights to the land. But when Eben meets the smoldering Abbie, he forgets about why he is at the farm to begin with, and pursues her instead. Abbie responds, and the couple engage in an impassioned love affair. But matters are complicated when Abbie becomes pregnant with Eben's child. She tells Ephriam that the baby is his, and he believes her. But Abbie fears the truth will be revealed at some point, regardless of what she tells Ephriam. Could Abbie be far from considering infanticide as an exit strategy? A greek tragedy set in 1840's New England, Desire Under the Elms is a movie you don't want to miss.moreless
