Desiree is a 1954 film centered around frenchwoman Desiree Clancy and her tumultuous love affair with Napoleon Bonaparte. The story of Desiree is entirely fictional. Daniel Taradash, the writer of the film, based the screenplay off of a novel by Annemarie Selinko. Henry Koster directs. In 1794, Desiree Clancy (Jean Simmons), a beautiful, young hat maker from Marseilles, becomes absolutely enamored with Napoleon Bonaparte (Marlon Brando). To her dismay, she ultimately marries a man named Jean-Baptiste Berandotte (Michael Rennie), a high-ranking councilman and aid to Napoleon. Things become hairy when Berandotte later joins the forces which attack Napoleon's reign as Emperor of France. Napoleon marries a woman named Josephine Beauharnais (Merle Oberon) who he kicks to the curb when it is revealed she is unable to conceive a child and provide him with a proper heir to the throne. A wonderfully-crafted tale of two people determined to end up together. See why Desiree was nominated for Academy Awards in Art Direction and Costume Design.moreless
