Desperado is a 1995 action-packed thriller starring Antonio Banderas, Salma Hayek, Cheech Marin, Joaquim de Alameida, Carlos Gallardo, Albert Michel Jr. and Steve Buscemi. Directed by Robert Rodriguez, Desperado is the sequel to Rodriguez's 1992 "El Mariachi." The movie centers around El Mariachi (Banderas), a mysterious desperado, who totes a guitar filled with guns. Mariachi is out to seek revenge against the drug lord Bucho (Alameida), who killed his lover. After ambushing several of Bucho's henchmen in a Mexican bar, he befriends a beautiful bookstore owner named Carolina (Hayek). Like most of the businesses in town, Carolina's bookstore is a front for cocaine dealing. Feeling betrayed, Bucho attempts to kill both El Mariachi and Carolina. In order to save himself and Carolina, he enlists the help of his two friends Campa (Gallardo) and Quino (Michel). They go to a deserted part of town to wage an all-out war against Bucho and his thugs.

Metacritic Score

  • 40

The New York Times Elvis Mitchell

Like "The Quick and the Dead," Desperado wavers uneasily between myth making and parody, so that too many scenes drag on long after they've lost their punch.

  • 40

    Variety Todd McCarthy

Could scarcely be more dazzling on a purely visual level, but it's mortally anemic in the story, character and thematic departments.

  • 30

    Los Angeles Times Kenneth Turan

A weakly comic splatter movie oversupplied with jokey, cartoonish violence.
