Destiny ('Der M''de Tod') is the 1921 silent film that first catapulted German director Fritz Lang into prominence on the world stage. The personification of Death (Bernhard Goetzke) arrives in a small village and abducts a young man (Walter Janssen), sequestering him behind an impenetrable wall. His distraught fianc''e (Lil Dagover) finds a mystic means to breach the wall and begs Death to spare her lover's life. The weary Death grants the brave woman a chance to save her fianc''e by presenting three tales from exotic locations throughout the word, each with similar circumstances: a young woman attempts to save her lover's life. Death's challenge is thus: if the woman can find a means of saving one of the three lives, he will spare her fianc''e. However, the woman fails at each trial, leading to one final challenge: if the woman can find a single person to give their life up within an hour, Death will reunite the two lovers. As time runs out the woman desperately seeks someone willing to sacrifice their life but in a burning hospital the woman faces a choice that will ultimately prove love's power in the face of death.moreless
