Deterrence is a French-American political drama thriller film released in 1999. It was written and directed by Rod Lurie and produced by Battleplan Productions. The movie stars Kevin Pollak, Sheryl Lee Ralph, Timothy Hutton, Clotilde Courau, Sean Astin, Michael Mantell, Kathryn Morris, and Ryan Cutrona. Set in 2008, Deterrence shows the story of President Walter Emerson (Kevin Pollak), who is on a tour across the country in a campaign for re-election. When a freak snow-storm hits the small Colorado diner he's visiting, he becomes stranded there. At the same time, the world finds itself on the brink of a nuclear attack, when Udei Hussein invades Kuwait and kills many, including US troops. Emerson sees this on the television at the diner and decides, using the camera-crew that was documenting his journey, to send a video message to Hussein stating that he will drop a nuclear bomb on Baghdad if Hussein does not retreat. Hussein retaliates by stating that he will launch a nuclear attack on many places worldwide if his own country is attacked.moreless
