Detroit Rock City is a 1999 comedy film about four friends and KISS Army members who will do whatever it takes to see their favorite band live in concert. Lex (Giuseppe Andrews), Trip (James DeBello), Hawk (Edward Furlong), and Jam (Sam Huntington) are four high school kids in a KISS cover band who idolize the demonic rock band. Jam's mother (Lin Shaye) is leading a crusade of parents against the music of the band KISS and rips up the friends' KISS concert tickets. After winning a new set of tickets from a radio call in show, the friends must help Jam escape from his mother and make their way to Detroit. They encounter many things along the way like some disco fans looking for trouble, a female hitchhiker (Natasha Lyonn). After quite a few misadventures, the group makes it to Detroit only to find that Hawk didn't stay on the phone long enough to claim the tickets. Now they are stuck in Detroit having their car stolen and have to find their way into the concert at any cost.moreless

Metacritic Score

  • 70

    Variety Dennis Harvey

It's crude, sexist, ear-splittingly loud and a helluva lotta fun for anyone suffering from past or present testosterone overload.

  • 20

The New York Times Elvis Mitchell

The cast never has much chance to shine. And the main attraction is kept all too understandably under wraps.

  • 10

    Los Angeles Times Kenneth Turan

This aggressively stupid film is merely business as usual, a compendium of all the current obsessions and fixations that make so many of these films such unhappy experiences.
