Digging to China is a 1998 drama directed by Timothy Hutton. It stars Evan Rachel Wood, Kevin Bacon, Mary Stuart Masterson, Marian Seldes and Cathy Moriarty. Harriet (Evan Rachel Wood) is a 10 year old girl whose parents are recently divorced. After the divorce, Harriet, her sister Gwen (Mary Stuart Materson) and her mother (Cathy Moriarty), go to live in a motel where all of the rooms are shaped like Indian tepees. Harriet is lonely in her new home and often daydreams of ways to escape from it. While on her way to take her son Ricky (Kevin Bacon) to a mental hospital, Leah Schroth's (Marian Seldes) car breaks down, leaving the two stranded at the hotel. Harriet and Ricky quickly become friends. When Harriet's mother dies in a car accident, she find out that Gwen is really her biological mother. The shock leads her and Ricky to run away. When Ricky becomes ill, Harriet must find help, but will helping her new friend mean she has to return to the life she hates?moreless
