Dinner at Eight is a 1933 romantic comedy about a group of people attending a lavish dinner party. Millicent Jordan (Billie Burke) is obsessed with planning the perfect dinner party for a group of wealthier acquaintances. One of the reasons she is so concerned with making sure every goes smoothly is that her husband, Oliver (Lionel Barrymore) is in poor health and his business is beginning to fail. Desperate to get help from a rich businessman named Dan Packard (Wallace Beery), he persuades Millicent to throw the party so that he might persuade Dan to help him. As the day of the party approaches, both Oliver's personal health begins to badly deteriorate and his business problems worsen. Even his old friend, Carlotta Vance (Marie Dressler) is debating whether she should pull her money out of the business. All of these problems begin to take their toll on Millicent, and eventually it becomes clear that this dinner party may not end up being the perfect one that the Jordans planned and needed.moreless
