Dirty Rotten Scoundrels follows two con men as they try to separate the rich guests of the French Riviera from some of their fortune. Lawrence Jamieson (Michael Caine) has seen much success with his con games in the region, and his generous gifts to Inspector Andrew (Anton Rodgers) ensures he stays out of trouble. That delicate balance is threatened when American Freddy Benson (Steve Martin) arrives looking for easy marks. Freddy recognizes Lawrence and demands training in the business, or he'll expose him. Lawrence agrees but forces Freddy to play his mentally disabled younger half-brother. Freddy soon becomes fed-up with the arrangement and challenges Lawrence. The first one to con Janet (Glenne Headly) out of $50,000 will be allowed to stay in Beaumont-sur-Mer and the other must leave and never return. The 1989 film was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture - Comedy/Musical.

Line by line, the dialogue isn't all that quotable, but there is consistently funny life on the screen. The film's comic timing is nearly flawless.

The chemistry between Martin and Caine is fun, and Headly provides a resilient foil as a woman who looks like a pushover but somehow never seems to topple.
