Movie Summary

Released:
1965

Doctor Zhivago, an epic of a novel, could have no one but Sir David Lean as the director of the film. With a reel that consists of The Bridge on the River Kwai, Lawrence of Arabia, and A Passage to India, Sir David Lean was most certainly the James Cameron of his day. Taking place between the years of 1912-1921, the film stars Omar Sharif in the lead role as the orphaned youth who is married to a devoted upper-class woman, yet in love with a less fortunate woman. Throughout the years, Zhivago is pulled in multiple directions - between fidelity and passion and between the peace and the revolution. Nominated for 10 Academy Awards, and winning 5 of those (Best Screenplay, Cinematography, Score, Costume Design, and Art Direction), Doctor Zhivago was and is still recognized as one of the pillars of film history. Currently, when adjusted for inflation, the film is the eight highest grossing film of all time.
