Document of the Dead is a 1985 documentary film directed and produced by Roy Frumkies and distributed by Synapse Films. The film focuses on the life and work of famed horror movie director George A. Romero. Romero is most widely known for his massive contributions to the development of the zombie subgenre of horror films. His six legendary films, beginning with 1968's "Night of the Living Dead," introduced many characteristics of zombies that are now considered essential for any zombie film. Romero's zombies lumber slowly across the screen and have an insatiable appetite for human brains. They are also able to turn living humans into zombies by delivering non-fatal bites. Document of the Dead examines Romero's many contributions to American horror films and examines the directorial techniques he used. The documentary also shows how Romero used stage makeup and practical effects to create the terrifying creatures in his wildly popular films.
