2004
Rating:
PG-13

Peter LaFleur owns the Average Joe's gym and has been struggling financially as of late. His gym members are a misfit cast of characters including a scrawny high school kid Justin, quirky middle aged Gordon, and Steve who thinks he is a pirate. Average Joe's financial woes are pumped up when owner of Globo-Gym, White Goodman plans to buy Average Joe's and shut it down. In order to raise money to buy back the gym, Peter enters his team into a dodgeball tournament. Once White gets wind of this plan, he too decides to enter his gym into the tournament to stop him. An eccentric, elderly man named Patches (Rip Torn) ends up coaching the Average Joe's into the finals of the dodgeball tournament in which they are set to face off against White and his Globo-Gym team in a winner-take-all showdown.

Metacritic Score

  • 70

    Variety Joe Leydon

Gleefully commingles slapstick and scatology, satire and sentiment, in a free-wheeling farce aimed at making auds laugh until they're thoroughly ashamed of themselves.

  • 60

The New York Times Stephen Holden

Nobody eviscerates the scary depths of male narcissism with such ferocity, and it is a huge relief to find Mr. Stiller flexing his oiled, low-comedy triceps with such vengeful glee.

  • 10

    Los Angeles Times Manohla Dargis

    Mean-spirited vulgarity and homosexual panic.
