Dogtown is a 1996 character drama about a failed actor returning to his hometown after 13 years away. Philip Van Horn (Trevor St. John) left Cuba, Missouri for fame and fortune in Hollywood but he failed miserably and has returned to live in his mother's, Rose (Karen Black), spare room. Surprisingly, his childhood friends and the folks around town assume he has lived a glamorous and successful life and press him for stories about celebrities. He gladly helps maintain their illusion about his life. He also reconnects with his high school crush, Dorothy (Mary Stuart Masterson), who feels trapped in her bleak existence as a small-town hairdresser. Her boyfriend, Ezar (Jon Favreau), was once a star athlete but he now has grown bitter and resentful and does not appreciate her obvious interest in Philip. As Philip catches up with his old friends, he finds they share his disappointment on how their lives turned out. George Hickenlooper ("Factory Girl") directs this bittersweet drama.moreless
