Movie Summary

Jeremy Leven
Don Juan Demarco is the 1994 romantic drama featuring Legendary actor Marlon Brando and Johnny Depp, and is now available on Amazon. Brando plays aged psychiatrist Dr. Jack Mickler, the best in the field, who has mere days before he is due to retire. He comes across a troubled young man in a black mask (Depp) about to commit suicide by jumping off of a billboard. Mickler talks him down and brings him to the clinic where he works. The boy claims to be no other but Don Juan, the famous lover of countless women. He claims that he has traveled far and wide in search of his lost one true love - a search that has lead him to New York City. Mickler agrees to try and cure this Don Juan of his romantic delusions in the short days before he is set to retire, or else the boy will be institutionalized. During their time together, Don Juan tells the doctor the elaborate story of his many travels - his exile from his home, his year at a harem, and isolation on a deserted island. His story inspires the doctor to reignite the passion in his marriage and makes him question that value of a sane reality when one can be so much happier in a world of their own creation.moreless

Metacritic Score

  • 70

The New York Times Janet Maslin

It benefits not only from Mr. Brando's peculiar presence, but also from Johnny Depp, who again proves himself a brilliantly intuitive young actor with strong ties to the Brando leg...

  • 50

    Los Angeles Times Peter Rainer

Depp is rather sweet in portraying Don Juan's self-delusions, but his performance is hampered by the role.

  • 50

    Chicago Sun-Times Roger Ebert

Brando doesn't so much walk through this movie as coast, in a gassy, self-indulgent performance no one else could have gotten away with.
