Donovan's Reef is the story of two World War II veterans directed by John Ford and starring John Wayne and Lee Marvin. Michael "Guns" Donovan (John Wayne) and Thomas "Boats" Gilhooey (Lee Marvin) are both Navy veterans. Donovan jumps a freight ship in order to escape to a French Polynesian island. Soon after, his friend, Gilhooey, joins him after meeting a man that goes by the name of William "Doc" Dedham (Jack Warden). The duo learn of a woman named Amelia Dedham (Elizabeth Allen) who is coming to their island. It so happens she runs the Dedham Shipping Company. Amelia has been traveling throughout the French Polynesian islands trying to figure out the truth about her father whom she never met. Donovan and Gilhooey are quick to devise a plan to cover up for her father, whom happens to be Doc. They both learn the reason she has come to the island is to hopefully find evidence of immoral behavior by her father, as that will allow her to keep her share of company stock as per a will. The governor of the French island is in on the coverup too. Will Amelia succeed in finding dirt on Doc? Donovan's Reef is the last John Ford film starring John Wayne.
