Doomed to Die is a 1940 comedic crime drama directed by William Nigh, and based on the detective series by author Hugh Wiley. In the film, shipping tycoon Cyrus Wentworth (Melvin Lang) is devastated by the recent disaster involving his ocean liner, Wentworth Castle. Soon after, he is shot dead in his office. The last person to see Cyrus alive was his daughter, Cynthia's (Catherine Craig), fiance, Dick Fleming (William Stelling). When police Captain William Street (Grant Withers) learns this, he thinks it is an open and shut case and that Dick must be the murderer. Dick is quickly apprehended and charged with Cyrus' murder. Newspaper journalist Roberta "Bobbie" Logan (Marjorie Reynolds), begins to investigate the murder, and feels Captain Street may have been too quick to arrest Dick. When Captain Street refuses to hear Bobbie out, she turns to a private detective, Mr. James Lee Wong (Boris Karloff), to help her solve the case.
