Doomwatch, directed by Peter Sasdy, is a 1972 British science fiction thriller based on a '70s BBC television series with the same name. A government environmental organization called Doomwatch sends Dr. Del Shaw (Ian Bannen) to Balfe, a small island, to investigate the effects of a recent oil spill. On the island the local population are unfriendly and secretive towards Dr. Shaw, and after he finds a half-buried body in the woods and is attacked by a disfigured man in a barn, he becomes convinced that the island is hiding a dark secret. As he continues his investigation, he finds a top-secret offshore Naval radioactive waste disposal site and also notices illegally dumped chemical drums from another waste disposal company. Back at Doomwatch headquarters, the scientists examine samples collected by Dr. Del Shaw and discover the presence of an artificial hormone growth stimulant in the seawater and fish. As the islanders rely on fish as their main food source, many of the locals have been infected with the contaminant, which causes a disfiguring disease. It is then up to Dr. Shaw to persuade the local people, who are incredibly suspicious of outsiders, to seek medical treatment and prevent the disease from spreading.moreless
