Doppelganger is a 2003 Japanese fictional thriller that tells the story of a scientist, Michio Hayasaki (Koji Yakusho) whose exact double, a doppelganger, arrives to complicate his life and his work. Hayasaki was warned that meeting his doppelganger would prove disastrous, even deadly, but he was too preoccupied with his Artificial Body invention to pay much attention. Hayasaki is struggling to make a wheelchair that would function as an artificial body for the disabled while his many failures make the possibility of losing his job as a scientist at a research company very real. When Hayasaki and his doppelganger meet, they work together on the invention though they have vastly different ways of doing things. The doppelganger is amoral, irreverent, and aggressive- Hayasaki's complete opposite. While working on the invention and dealing with his doppelganger, Hayasaki is pulled into a mission of self-discovery that is as dangerous as it is revealing.
