Rating:

Down and Out in Beverly Hills is a hilarious exploration of class and culture in 1980s California. Beverly Hills couple Dave (Richard Dreyfuss) and Barbara Whiteman (Bette Midler) are unsatisfied with their lives even though they live in a beautiful home and do not want for material goods. Yet, they find themselves searching for happiness. Barbara practices yoga and aerobics hoping they will somehow lead to spiritual fulfillment. Dave chooses instead to sleep with their maid while lamenting his situation. Homeless man Jerry Baskin (Jeff Bridges) barges into this mess by trying to kill himself in the Whiteman's pool. He is saved and begins living in their home. Living in their home, Jerry begins changing the way the Whiteman family lives while also transforming his own life. Director Paul Mazursky's Down and Out in Beverly Hills is a laugh-out-loud satirical look at the American dream featuring the biggest stars of the 1980s.

Metacritic Score

  • 100

    Chicago Sun-Times Roger Ebert

Perhaps I have made the movie sound too serious... So let me just say that Down and Out in Beverly Hills made me laugh longer and louder than any film I've seen in a long time.

  • 90

The New York Times Janet Maslin

As a comedy of manners it has a dependably keen aim, with its most wicked barbs leavened by Mr. Mazursky's obvious fondness for his characters.

  • 70

    Time Richard Schickel

On the basically farcical level where it chooses to stay, it is a funny and likable movie
