PG-13
Down to Earth is the story of a comedian named Lance Barton (Chris Rock) trying to prove himself in front of an actual audience. His latest gig is a bust, and Lance gets one final chance to show his talent. He enters a comedy contest at the Apollo, but on the way, he gets hit by a truck and killed. He's taken to heaven, where a pair of angels, King (Chazz Palminteri) and Keyes (Eugene Levy), inform him that he has died before his time. As a result, he is to be given another body and a second chance at life. Together, the three of them fly across the world looking for a candidate. They settle on Charles Wellington III, a wealthy caucasian businessman. Lance is unwilling at first, but he sees Sontee Jenkins (Regina King), a woman he's been trying to romance, at Wellington's apartment. He agrees to inhabit the body, but only temporarily until the angels can find him something more suitable.moreless

Metacritic Score

  • 40

The New York Times A.O. Scott

Mr. Rock's attempts to disentangle himself from his persona while offering audiences a sliver of insight into his world is a lofty ambition, but Down to Earth falls short.

  • 20

    Los Angeles Times Kenneth Turan

Rock is undisputably gifted and charismatic, but when Down to Earth takes his edge away, the film's energy goes with it. And without energy, no comedy can survive.

  • 20

    Variety Todd McCarthy

A very earthbound comic fantasy, a racially flip-flopped "Heaven Can Wait" redo stuck in a purgatory with just enough meager laughs to keep it from a more fiery fate.
