Down to the Bone is a 2004 psychological drama that tells the tragic tale of a housewife in suburbia, Irene (Vera Farmiga) and her morbid descent into drug addiction. As Irene's marriage becomes stagnant and the cold of winter begins to creep into her bones as well as her mind, Irene's ability to balance the facade of a healthy marriage, her role as a caring mother, and her secret drug addiction all come crashing down in one inevitable explosion of pressure. Checking herself into a rehabilitation center seems to be the obvious solution to restore the person she wishes she could be again, but problems creep up again just like the chill of winter and Irene discovers that kicking the habit is going to be the hardest thing she has ever done. One glimmer of hope, however, still remains for Irene in the form of a new and forbidden love. Down to the Bone's dark and fascinating treatment of a common person tortured by addiction is as real as life itself.moreless
