Downtown is a 1990 police comedy directed by Richard Benjamin. In the film, Alex Kearney (Anthony Edwards) is a straight-laced cop who enjoys working and living in a rich, plush suburb of Philadelphia. When a routine stop goes bad, Kearney ends up making himself and the department look bad. As a result, his superiors punish him by transferring him downtown. The downtown area is the most dangerous area in the city, filled with violent crime, drug dealers and dangerous thugs. When he arrives at the downtown precinct, the police officers there are not happy to see him. Nobody wants to work with Alex because they think he is going to get himself, and possibly anybody around him, killed. Detective Dennis Curren (Forest Whitaker) is chosen to partner with Alex. These unlikely partners begin to work the downtown streets and learn from each other in the process. Can Detective Curren teach Alex the ropes before he gets himself killed, or are there some things you just can't teach?
