Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is the acclaimed 1931 adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson's literary classic directed by Rouben Mamoulian. Dr. Henry Jekyll (Fredric March, The Best Years of Our Lives, in a Best Actor Oscar winning performance for the dual role of the scientist and the brute he creates out of himself, Mr. Hyde) is working on a radical new formula that he believes will split the dual nature of man right down the middle, effectively liberating the more upright twin and eradicating the evil side to produce a new generation of human which will be better than the average being. He succeeds even more precisely than he ever would have hoped as he imbibes his formula and the potion transforms him into the bestial, ape-like id of his inner conscience, Mr. Hyde. Hyde enjoys being free from the constraints of the do-gooder Jekyll and uses his new found freedom to visit prostitutes, go on binges and cause general trouble. Jekyll must now struggle to maintain his identity as the two halves of himself war for supremacy.moreless
