Movie Summary

Dreamgirls is an award-winning musical from Dreamworks SKG that is based on the Tony award-winning Broadway musical by Tom Eyen and was written and directed by Bill Condon. In this big screen story of stardom, success, dreams and the high cost of it all in a cutthroat music industry, personal relationships and dreams are put to the test. In the 1960's, a series of dreams come to fruition when ambitious car salesman Curtis Taylor Jr. (Jamie Foxx) discovers a trio of black, female souls singers Effie (Academy Award winning actress Jennifer Hudson), Lorrell (Anika Noni Rose) and Deena (Beyonce Knowles). He signs the trio of young, enthusiastic eighteen-year olds and books them the job of a lifetime as backup singers for R&B sensation James ÔThunder' Early (Eddie Murphy) while he creates his own record label and starts hustling the women. When Early quits the game, Curtis seizes the chance and propelles the girls into the spotlight as the ÔDreams'. Their friendship takes a toll as their stardom rises and the undeniably talented Effie is pushed out to make way for the softer voice of Deena. Effie is forced into poverty as Curtis takes the ÔDreams' to the top. As these small town girls dreams become true in the big city they slowly start to realize if their fame is worth the sacrifices they've made to get there.moreless
