Dreaming Lhasa is a film written and directed by Ritu Sarin and Tenzing Sonam. Karma (Tenzin Chokyi Gyatso), a young documentary film maker, travels to Dharamsala, home of the Dalai Lama and the exiled Tibetan government in Northern India. Karma's journey begins as a way to escape the fetters of an unsatisfying personal life in New York City, and perhaps find her roots in the process. She is making a film about former political prisoners who have escaped the repression and censure of Tibet. One of her interview sources is a man named Dhondup (Jampa Kalsang), an ex-monk and lover of Western women, who asks for help in fulfilling a task set to him by his dying mother. A charm box is to be delivered to an exiled Tibetan named Loga (Phuntsok Namgyal Dhumkhang), a former CIA resistance fighter who is missing and presumed dead. Together, Karma and Dhondup travel across Tibet in search of their elusive prize, and find themselves drawn together in an entrancing tale of mystery and self-discovery.moreless

Metacritic Score

  • 70

    Variety Robert Koehler

A sensitive if literal-minded tale that demonstrates how Tibet's national identity is of a piece with its spiritual heart.

  • 63

    Boston Globe Ty Burr

It's a Tibetan film -- a rare thing -- made by Tibetans, starring Tibetans, and set in the increasingly desperate exile community of Dharamsala .

  • 50

    The New York Times

A fine example of how feature films can be used to deliver urgent political messages, but as drama, it doesn't quite work.
