Driftwood focuses on recently orphaned child Jenny Hollingsworth (Natalie Wood), who is adopted by local doctor, Steve Webster (Dean Jagger) at the demand of the town sheriff. It is then that Jenny finds and adopts a stray collie, who is the lone survivor of a plane crash. It is not known how important the dog is until Jenny finds a tag around its neck saying that its blood is a necessity to produce the spotted fever vaccine. All the while, Dr. Webster's fianc''e Susan Moore (Ruth Warrick) is displeased with both of the adoptees, causing conflict within their home. Eventually Dr. Webster petitions to have a hospital installed in the town, all the while working on the vaccine himself. In a heated argument with the town mayor, Webster's lab is destroyed, causing an outbreak of the virus he was working to produce a vaccine for. It is only when Jenny contracts the disease that Dr. Webster realizes how important his research really is.moreless
