Drumline (Special Edition) is a 2002 drama directed by Charles Stone III. The film follows Devon Miles (Nick Cannon) who graduates from high school in New York City and goes on to Atlanta on a full marching band scholarship to attend A&T University, a fictional traditionally black college. Known for its stringent requirements and strict discipline, A&T requires all members to read music. When Devon arrives, he begins a grueling induction process where members vie for top positions in the band. Given his superior talent, Devon lands a P1 position, the highest level possible. He also finds time to romance upperclassman, Laila (Zoe Saldana). Cocky with success, Devon's attitude begins to irritate percussion leader Sean Taylor (Leonard Roberts). To bring him down a notch, Sean challenges Devon to take a solo during the first game of the season, believing that he will fail miserably and embarrass himself. Contrary to his expectations, Devon performs remarkably and grows even cockier. Things begin to fall apart for Devon, however, when band director, Dr. Lee (Orlando Jones), discovers he can not read music. Believing he can succeed on talent alone, Devon considers leaving the band for a rival band from Morris Brown College. Devon soon discovers that his talent will take him only so far. To succeed, he must earn the respect of his band and girlfriend. Featuring music from top rappers including Petey Pablo and Trick Daddy, this engaging drama will wow viewers with its mesmerizing choreography and driving beat.
