Duke Is Tops is a 1938 musical directed by William Nolte. The film features the first screen appearance of actress and singer Lena Horne. Gorgeous Ethel Andrews (Lena Horne) is known as the "Bronze Goddess." Her charismatic stage presence, great physical beauty and flawless singing voice mean that she is destined for great things. At the moment, though, young Ethel is content to work for her promoter and friend, Duke Davis (Ralph Cooper). Thanks to the popularity of the Bronze Goddess, Duke is able to enjoy growing success in his field. Ethel has attracted the attention of the big league, however. At first, she refuses to leave Duke, preferring loyalty to fame and fortune. Duke knows that he has to force Ethel to accept her true destiny as a star. Now broke, Duke joins forces with Doc Dorando (Laurence Criner), selling an all-purpose elixir with the use of catchy song and dance routines. It seems that Duke and Ethel will never reconnect, but when he unexpectedly hears word of Ethel's struggles in New York, Duke rushes in to save the day.moreless
