Mark Robson

1974

Earthquake, a disaster movie, tells the story of a handful of people who must escape death when a terrifying earthquake hits Los Angeles. Charlton Heston heads up the cast in this movie where ordinary citizens must fight to survive when this display of nature's power shatters the daily routine of their lives. Making matters worse, the earthquake is far from the only problem. Stewart Graff is a man in a failing marriage, who must choose between his wife Remy and Denise Marshall, an actress he meets just before the earthquake. Sgt. Lou Slade, a cop, gets suspended after a pursuit goes wrong. A group of people get stuck near the top of a skyscraper, and their boss Sam must find a way to get them to safety. Earthquake is about more than just a natural disaster: it is the story of what people do when their world is shaken apart around them. With its gripping action and story, Earthquake is a classic in its genre.

For those who have a soft spot for calamity pictures, there's a sense of ritual cleansing afterward. And for some reason, it also made me hungry.

    Time Out

Flat, generally laughable hokum, and the film ends up nowhere near as interesting a comment on the psychological aspects of disaster as Juggernaut.
