East Is East is a 1999 English film directed by Damie O'Donnell and starring Om Puri, Linda Bassett, and Jordan Routledge. The film is based on the acclaimed play of the same name written by Ayub Khan-Din. Set in Salford, England, the film focuses on a dysfunctional Anglo-Pakistani family as they struggle to maintain some semblance of order in their daily lives. George Khan (Puri), the patriarch of the family, teaches his children the traditional ways of a Pakistani family, but their laissez-faire English mother (Bassett) does little enforce or uphold those traditions. Most of the children were born in England and see themselves as Englishmen and less as having strong Pakistani heritage. East is East was nominated for four BAFTA Awards, including Best Film, Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role, Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role, and Best Screenplay.
