East of Eden is the classic 1955 American film starring James Dean in his first major film role. Set in 1917, the film tells the story of brothers Cal (Dean) and Aron (Richard Davalos). Living and working on a farm in the Salinas valley in central California, Cal and Aron are led to believe that their mother has long since died, but Cal discovers that she is alive and well and managing a nearby brothel. When their father's vegetable shipping business doesn't go well, Cal borrows five thousand dollars and enters the bean growing business. The business is wildly successful and Cal plans on giving much of the profit to Adam at the surprise party he and Aron are planning. The party takes a turn for the worse when Cal and Aron's fianc' Abra realize that a mutual attraction exists between the two of them and their father refuses to take the money from Cal. The brothers and their father struggle to keep the family together as pieces begin to fall apart.
