Easy Virtue is a 2008 romantic comedy by director Stephan Elliott, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Sheridan Jobbins. Based on the play by Noel Coward, the film is about a young Englishman, John Whittaker (Ben Barnes), who marries a glamorous American widow and successful race car driver, Larita (Jessica Biel), after meeting her in Monaco. John takes Larita to meet his family at their huge rural mansion, where seven generations of Whittakers have been gentleman farmers. Larita faces the disapproval of John’s mother, Veronica Whittaker (Kristin Scott Thomas), but does not waver. But even Larita’s strong will is tried when John does not seem to see any urgency in moving out of the mansion. When familial problems draw John back to his parents and sisters, and away from Larita, the marriage is on shaky legs. Easy Virtue won a 2009 Audience Award at the Newport Beach Film Festival and was nominated for a 2009 ALFS Award, a 2008 British Independent Film Award, and a 2009 Awgie Award.moreless

Metacritic Score

  • 80

The New York Times Stephen Holden

In its cold-eyed assessment of the English aristocracy Easy Virtue has none of the lurking Anglophilia found in Merchant-Ivory movies.

  • 80

    Los Angeles Times

Elliott has created a wonderfully rich battle for propriety in Easy Virtue. The humor might sting, but the pain is worth the pleasure.

    Variety Todd McCarthy

An effervescent entertainment that marks a welcome return for "Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert" director Stephan Elliott after a nine-year absence.
