Ed is the story of a talented, yet troubled, baseball player, Jack Cooper (Matt LeBlanc). He is a minor-league pitcher who performs excellently in practice, but can't produce in the actual games because of a mental block. While Cooper is struggling to overcome his problems, his team hires a new mascot, Ed, who is a chimpanzee. An unfortunate twist forces Cooper and Ed to become roommates. Little does he know, the struggling pitcher finds exactly what he needs. Cooper's newfound friendship helps him unlock his enormous potential and become the team's star pitcher, while Ed is busy becoming the slick-fielding third baseman. Their friendship ends up helping Cooper in more than baseball; he learns to open his heart and live a better life. Ed is a family film that provides some valuable lessons for kids. It also produces entertaining scenes with some slapstick monkey antics and various scenarios from America's pastime.

Metacritic Score

  • 50

    Chicago Sun-Times

If you haven't already guessed, Ed is not a great movie. What it is is a fun way to spend 1 1/2 hours not thinking. [15 Mar 1996, p.33]

  • 50

    Baltimore Sun Stephen Hunter

About on the level of an After School Special put together by people in a real hurry to get on with their lives, Ed plays pretty dead for all except the very dumb at heart.

  • 38

    Philadelphia Inquirer Steven Rea

Where does Ed, which is about a baseball-playing chimp and his human sidekick, fit in the pantheon of simian cinema? Way, way down there - on a level with toe lint. [15 Mar 1996, p.5]
