Edge of Darkness is a 2010 thriller directed by Martin Campbell and based on a BBC television show from the 1980s. Thomas Craven (Mel Gibson) is excited to see his beautiful, intelligent 24-year-old daughter, Emma (Bojana Novakovic), who has been away from home for some time. His happiness at seeing Emma is disrupted by his daughter's apparent illness. Worried that she is coming down with a virus, Thomas sets out to take Emma to the hospital, but before they can leave the driveway Emma is shot and killed by a mysterious assailant. Traumatized and heartbroken, Thomas fights his way through a haze of grief and sets out on a quest for vengeance. Since Thomas works as a homicide detective, he first assumes that Emma was accidentally killed in an attempt on his own life. As he digs deeper into the murder, however, Thomas starts to realize that his daughter was keeping secrets from him. What he finds out will change the detective's life forever.moreless

Metacritic Score

  • 63

    Chicago Sun-Times Roger Ebert

Winstone's interaction with Gibson provides the movie with much of its interest. For the rest, it's a skillful exercise in CGI and standard-order thriller supplies.

  • 60

    Variety Brian Lowry

Campbell's topnotch production team yields predictably polished results, but the director's decision to revisit the late Troy Kennedy Martin's teleplay, finally, feels lacking.

  • 50

The New York Times A.O. Scott

Edge of Darkness is reasonably well executed, but its competence reeks of fatigue. Another dead kid. Another angry dad. Another day at the office.
