Edge of Seventeen is the story of a high school student in the small town of Sandusky, Ohio in the year 1984, the prime of when 80s culture was at its fullest. This closeted male student Eric (Chris Stafford) and his best friend, Maggie (Tina Holmes), take on summer jobs in food service at the local amusement park, they befriend their lesbian manager, Angie (Lea DeLaria), and a gay college student named Rod (Andersen Gabrych). There is chemistry between the two boys, even as Maggie on the side still wants Eric's affections. Rod eventually gives Eric the first-time gay experience he was looking for, and then he goes back to college at Ohio State, leaving Eric to spend his entire senior year confused and looking for love. Eventually, Eric learns that his frustrated pianist mom (Stephanie McVay) is going to have to get a job to help send him to study music in New York. Meanwhile, Eric ventures out to the local gay disco, a hopping joint run by none other than his old boss, Angie, who shows him around the gay scene, so he can venture for himself. Eric is still hurt by the quick sex with Rod, feeling meaningless, so he decides to sleep with Maggie. But he's too open and sensitive to pull a fast one over on her; deflated at his rejection and his ability to play with her affections, she ends the friendship, leaving Eric to speak in confidence with his mother and soon find his place in the gay community.moreless
