Movie Summary

Director:
Ron Howard
Released:
1999
Rating:
PG-13
EDtv takes a comic look at how the media and celebrity hype invade our lives. Matthew McConaughey ("Failure to Launch") plays Ed, an amiable store clerk, who lets TV producer Cynthia (Ellen DeGeneres) put a camera on him 24 hours a day. Of course, Ed's entire life erupts in chaos. His girlfriend Shari (Jenna Elfman of TV's "Dharma & Greg") leaves him to protect her privacy. His long-missing father (Dennis Hopper) unexpectedly returns and exposes a family secret. His resentful brother Ray (Woody Harrelson) threatens to publish a tabloid book called "My Brother Pissed On Me." While fending off the seductive charms of an ambitious actress (Elizabeth Hurley), Ed must find a way to make his life private property again. Directed by Ron Howard ("A Beautiful Mind"), this 1999 broad comedy anticipated the inanities of reality TV and features an impressive supporting cast, including Oscar winner Martin Landau ("Ed Wood") and Rob Reiner ("All in the Family").
