Educating Rita is a feel-good movie from 1983 about the story of Rita White (Julie Walters). As a hairdresser, Rita strives to better her life by returning to school to earn a degree. A professor at the school, Dr. Frank Bryant (Michael Caine) is a depressed English teacher looking to switch careers. He becomes an alcoholic after his wife leaves him. However, his world gets flipped upside down when Rita winds up in his class. Only looking for an education to open up more opportunity in her life, Rita begins working one-on-one with Dr. Bryant. Both people begin feeling better and the relationship between the two blossoms. The only catch is that they each want what the other has. Frank wants Rita as she is and Rita wants the success that Frank has. This romantic British flick directed by Lewis Gilbert takes a realistic perspective leaving the viewer satisfied with the result.
